A Statement from the Alliance

Divisive and racist remarks made in private or in public by our elected officials cannot be countenanced. We join our community members in renouncing the anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, racist, and anti-LGBTQIA+ comments made by Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and other Los Angeles City Councilmembers.

The Alliance for Children’s Rights advocates for and provides critical legal services and support programs to young people in LA’s child welfare system. About 85% of the approximately 30,000 children and young adults in our foster care system are Black or Brown. The barriers we work with our clients to overcome every day are made even more difficult  when our representatives speak with hatred and find ways to divide our communities. Statements like those have no place in government , and councilmembers who perpetuate racism are not fit for public leadership. We believe the announced resignation of Nury Martinez is a critical first step in repairing this egregious breach of public trust.

We remain committed to advancing an equitable and just society, and urge our community to stay united in holding our city’s leaders accountable.
