POSITION SUMMARY
The Alliance for Children’s Rights is seeking a dedicated individual to join our Transition Age Youth Services Program as a Legal Assistant. This is a non-exempt, full-time paid position.
ABOUT THE ALLIANCE
The Alliance for Children’s Rights is a nonprofit organization that provides free holistic legal services and advocacy to youth and families impacted by child welfare and juvenile justice systems in Los Angeles County, and works to enact policy changes statewide. Our lawyers, advocates, and social workers, together with hundreds of pro bono attorneys and community volunteers, work to ensure that those we serve have the tools to overcome barriers to stability and success, and access to the education, healthcare, and financial supports that they need. Since 1992, we have helped over 150,000 children.
ABOUT THE Transition age youth PROGRAM:
The Transition Age Youth Services Program educates current and former foster youth about their legal rights and advocates to resolve barriers they encounter to employment, education, and health care. Program staff resolve identity thefts and consumer frauds, review contracts and leases, clear juvenile tickets, seal juvenile records and appeal SSI denials. The TAY Services team also offers youth support and access to resources that promote independence and wellbeing, including housing, education, and employment resources.
WHAT YOUR IMPACT WILL BE
- Serve clients facing barriers to independence by connecting them with appropriate resource and services, as well as relevant county agencies, community partners, and service providers.
- Lead presentations to groups, including youth, caregivers, community partners, and service providers.
- Support TAY services attorney, including gathering and organizing supporting documents and other evidence to support individual cases.
- Support other Alliance departments with information related to TAY, including providing information to Policy, Communications, Development, and other program staff.
- Facilitate life skills workshops for youth with community partners, such as the Junior League.
- Conduct client intake and screening, and participate in program case reviews and staff meetings.
- Attend other TAY-related community meetings.
- Open, close and maintain case files.
- Complete administrative duties, including copying, data entry, and records maintenance.
- Other duties as assigned.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS
- Lived experience in foster care.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work well with a wide variety of people and personalities.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with colleagues, supervisors, and groups, as well one-on-one with our youth clients.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to multi-task.
- Strong attention to detail and thorough work product.
- College graduate or equivalent work experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Zoom.
- Must have reliable transportation.

COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS:
Normally, this position would work from our Los Angeles office. However, due to Covid-19, this position will temporarily work remotely from home. This position may be asked to return to work in the office at any time and at the employer’s discretion.
