The Alliance and First Star are partnering to help 28 eleventh graders in foster care get on the right academic footing so they can attend college. At the end of last year, many youth in the innovative First Star UCLA Bruin Academy were struggling academically. Each youth had different scenarios resulting from frequent home and school changes, loss of credits, and behavioral and educational setbacks. Through months of advocacy with dozens of schools, the Alliance was able to recover lost credits and establish education plans tailored to each youth’s education needs.
“It was only when my attorney advocated for me that I got my credits,” said Sarah. “Now I’m on track to graduate so that I can go to college and one day become an astronomer.”
The youth are part of the First Star UCLA Bruin Academy, a program of the First Star nonprofit that is fostering education achievement for foster youth who would otherwise get lost in the cracks of our education system. The First Star Program provides foster youth with a huge opportunity to experience and envision a successful future. First Star founder and CEO Peter Samuelson wants these youth to be among the 3 percent of foster youth to earn a college degree. The Alliance is proud to play a role in making this happen.
