The Center for the Study of Violence (NEV/USP) would like to invite researchers, professors, students, NGOs, human rights activists and the general public to take part in this forum of discussion, which is going to take place on August 30th and 31st of 2010. In this website, you will be able to register for the event, as well as find other information on the Conference.

Purpose of the event: provide an interagency and intersectional forum to examine the evidence on health, equity, justice, poverty and human rights. The event seeks to shed lights on the roles of States and pharmaceutical transnational companies (PTNCs) to respect, protect and fulfill the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health. The meeting aims at facilitating an analysis of the issue through the lens of the Right to Health and Global Justice. The seminar will be divided into three sessions that will encompass the moral, philosophical, political and legal rationales of the problem.

The event seeks to:

(i) raise public awareness and political will, through effective advocacy;

(ii) call for appropriate action at national and international levels, in both public and private sectors;

(iii) call both public and private institutions to be accountable for human rights violations, in particular the Right to Health, especially when it comes to the most vulnerable and neglected populations;

(iv) determine issues for further studies, ensuring ongoing monitoring and active advocacy by public pressure.

Outcomes:

- A Website on the responsibilities of PTCNs in relation to the right to health

- Publication of the papers presented by all panelists

- A final report with conclusions and recommendations, to be developed in the final workshop

Mary Robinson(former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), US Ambassador Donahoe and Dr. Francisco Songane (former Minister of Health, Mozambique) will make keynote addresses.

Other maternal health and human rights experts, from all regions of the world, will also deliver presentations.

Increasingly, maternal mortality is being recognised as a global human rights issue of enormous importance. Each year, there are about 500,000 preventable maternal deaths. The great majority occur in Asia and Africa. However,
disaggregated data from high-income countries show that women from ethnic and other minorities suffer disproportionately from preventable maternal mortality. In short, maternal mortality is a human rights issue in all regions of the world.

The background to the International Roundtable includes last year’s UN Human Rights Council landmark resolution on maternal mortality and morbidity, this year’s OHCHR report on the issue, Millennium Development Goal 5, and the growing international commitment to address maternal mortality and morbidity.

A few days after the Roundtable, the UN Human Rights Council is likely to decide its next steps on this issue.

Crucially, the Roundtable will focus on one critically important – and often neglected – component of a human rights-based approach to maternal mortality: monitoring and accountability. The roundtable will provide human rights experts, health professionals, diplomats and others with an opportunity to learn about and explore monitoring, accountability and redress in relation to maternal mortality. Expert panellists will consider good practices regarding maternal death audits, the role of national human rights institutions, and the contribution of judicial procedures. The Roundtable will look at both the international and national levels.

The Roundtable will take place from 9.00am-5.15pm at the Geneva Business Center (12, Avenue des Morgines, CH-1213 Petit-Lancy), a short bus ride from the centre of Geneva.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided. There is no registration fee. Unfortunately, we do not have funds to subsidise travel and hotel costs.

If you wish to attend on 2nd September, please let us know, as soon as possible, by contacting Pia Janning at mm2september@gmail.com Thereafter, you will be provided with additional information and documentation about the Roundtable.

Spaces are limited so please do not delay.

Every two years, WHO co-sponsors the World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion. Considered the major scientific platform for furthering knowledge on violence and injuries, the World Conference draws around 1,200 of the world’s leading researchers, practitioners and advocates from more than 130 countries.

The event is hosted and organized by Liverpool John Moores University, a WHO Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention. The overall theme is “Safe and Equitable Communities”. Topics include among others prevention of violence; prevention of unintentional injuries; occupational safety; and trauma care and disaster management.

While primarily a scientific gathering, the World Conference increasingly draws policy-makers. Two important pre-meetings to the 10th World Conference will convene policy-makers from the health sector:

the European Public Health Ministerial Conference on Injury and Violence Prevention; and

the Third Global Meeting of Ministry of Health Focal Points for Violence and Injury Prevention.

These two events contribute to bridging the science of what works to prevent violence and injuries with the policies that lead to action in countries.

The biennial International AIDS Conference being held in Vienna, Austria from 18–23 July 2010, brings together some 25 000 scientists, government representatives, health workers, activists, business leaders, and people with HIV and AIDS.

The theme of AIDS 2010, “Rights here, right now” emphasizes that promoting and protecting human rights is needed for a successful response to HIV.

Conference topics include the status of the epidemic in southern Africa and other regions, combination prevention strategy, advances in antiretroviral therapy, expansion of policies and programmes for people who inject drugs, and political accountability for universal access and human rights.

AIDS 2010 coincides with a major effort to achieve universal access to HIV prevention and treatment by the end of this year. As the global economic crisis threatens to reduce public investment, the conference affirms the value of HIV financing in achieving broader health and development goals.

Mapping the Landscapes of Childhood

Venue: University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

Date: Thursday, May 5 – Saturday, May 7, 2011

This multidisciplinary conference will engage scholars and practitioners from a wide variety of academic disciplines (including the sciences, arts, humanities, social sciences, policy studies, and education) in a consideration of the state of child studies, which has changed significantly in recent decades. Disciplines long dedicated to the study of the child, and childhood, have been recently revitalized and are engaged with the central problematic of what the child and childhood represent, including how these categories relate to others such as infant and youth. Figured in the plural, childhoods pose a significant crossroads for theoretical and empirical work on the nature of being human and development broadly construed. Various disciplines consider childhood as an experience, as a biological fact, as a social category, as an artistic and literary construct, as a category for historical and demographic analysis, as a category of personhood, and as a locus for human rights and policy interventions. Participating scholars will examine childhoods of the past, present, and future from around the world, and will present research results, policy approaches, and theoretical paradigms that are emergent in this re-engagement with the child and childhood. Bringing together divergent networks of expertise, this conference offers the opportunity for new research collaborations and the scholarly dissemination of innovative research.

Conference Format: three days of multidisciplinary panels with scholarly presentations on conference themes; poster sessions; several keynote events; practitioner sessions; and a film night.

Conference Themes and Questions: definitions and boundaries of childhood: invented or discovered?; indigenous theories and experiences of childhood; the importance of gender; the impact of globalization; the impact of changing technologies on children and childhood, and on the study of children and childhood; concepts of adolescence; vulnerability and empowerment; and health, development, disability, and risk. Proposals for papers on additional themes will also be considered.

Keynote Speakers:

Dr. Patrizia Albanese (Co-director of the Centre for Children, Youth and Families, Ryerson University)

Dr. Mona Gleason (Department of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia)

Dr. Allison James (Professor of Sociology and Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences, University of Sheffield)

Dr. Perry Nodelman (Professor Emeritus, Department of English, University of Winnipeg)

Dr. Mavis Reimer (Canada Research Chair in the Culture of Childhood and Director of the Centre for Research in Young People’s Texts and Cultures, University of Winnipeg)

Dr. Richard Tremblay (Director, Research Unit on Children’s Psychosocial Maladjustment, University of Montreal)

Submission Guidelines: For presentations, and for posters, please submit a 300 to 500 word proposal/abstract by October 1, 2010 on the conference website: www.uleth.ca/conreg/childhoods/ Proposals for organized panels that are multidisciplinary are also welcome. Please note that presentations should be a maximum of 20 minutes in length. We would especially like to encourage graduate students to contribute posters on their current research and will offer a prize for best student poster.

For more information and to submit abstracts, please see the conference website www.uleth.ca/conferences/childhood. For general inquiries, please contact childhoods@uleth.ca.
